    Self-correcting electronically scanned pressure sensor

    Get PDF
A multiple channel high data rate pressure sensing device is disclosed for use in wind tunnels, spacecraft, airborne, process control, automotive, etc., pressure measurements. Data rates in excess of 100,000 measurements per second are offered with inaccuracies from temperature shifts less than 0.25% (nominal) of full scale over a temperature span of 55 C. The device consists of thirty-two solid state sensors, signal multiplexing electronics to electronically address each sensor, and digital electronic circuitry to automatically correct the inherent thermal shift errors of the pressure sensors and their associated electronics

Poisoning of Hydrogen Dissociation at Pd (100) by Adsorbed Sulfur Studied by ab initio Quantum Dynamics and ab initio Molecular Dynamics

We report calculations of the dissociative adsorption of H_2 at Pd (100) covered with 1/4 monolayer of sulfur using quantum dynamics as well as molecular dynamics and taking all six degrees of freedom of the two H atoms fully into account. The ab initio potential-energy surface (PES) is found to be very strongly corrugated. In particular we discuss the influence of tunneling, zero-point vibrations, localization of the nuclei's wave function when narrow valleys of the PES are passed, steering of the approaching H_2 molecules towards low energy barrier configurations, and the time scales of the center of mass motion and the other degrees of freedom. Several ``established'' concepts, which were derived from low-dimensional dynamical studies, are shown to be not valid.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Surf. Sci. Lett. "Third places" and social interaction in deprived neighbourhoods in Great Britain

    Get PDF
This paper explores social interaction in local ‘public’ social spaces such as local shops, pubs, cafés, and community centres in deprived neighbourhoods. More specifically, it examines the importance, role and function of these places, which have been described by Oldenberg and Brissett (Qual Sociol 5(4):265–284, 1982), Oldenburg (Urban design reader. Architectural Place, Oxford, 2007) as being “third places” of social interaction after the home (first) and workplace (second). It does so by drawing on data gleaned from in-depth interviews with 180 residents in six deprived areas neighbourhoods across Great Britain, conducted as part of a study of the links between poverty and place funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. The paper notes that local third places are an important medium for social interaction in these areas, although their importance appears to vary by population group. It notes that shops appear to be a particularly important social space. It also identifies some of the barriers to social interaction within third places and concludes by highlighting some of the key implications for policy to emerge from the research

Low extractable wipers for cleaning space flight hardware

    Get PDF
There is a need for low extractable wipers for solvent cleaning of space flight hardware. Soxhlet extraction is the method utilized today by most NASA subcontractors, but there may be alternate methods to achieve the same results. The need for low non-volatile residue materials, the history of soxhlet extraction, and proposed alternate methods are discussed, as well as different types of wipers, test methods, and current standards

Stability of networks of delay-coupled delay oscillators

Dynamical networks with time delays can pose a considerable challenge for mathematical analysis. Here, we extend the approach of generalized modeling to investigate the stability of large networks of delay-coupled delay oscillators. When the local dynamical stability of the network is plotted as a function of the two delays then a pattern of tongues is revealed. Exploiting a link between structure and dynamics, we identify conditions under which perturbations of the topology have a strong impact on the stability. If these critical regions are avoided the local stability of large random networks can be well approximated analytically
